The musical production will feature a rousing blend of Gospel, R&B and Soul music from "back in the day" performed with passion and power by some of the best singers in New York. Sing Harlem Sing! will also provide a musical context for some of the historical challenges, moods, and triumphs experienced by Harlem and the country.
"Nothing is more stirring and healing than the sound of the human voice singing with energy, enthusiasm and power," says Vy Higginsen, who was also a popular radio personality on WBLS, WWRL and KISS-FM in New York City. Showcasing the Harlem, New York Gospel singers, Sing Harlem Sing! will open on October 10, 2009 at Harlem's Dempsey Theater (127 West 127th Street) with two shows: 1:30 P.M. and 4:30 P.M. The show will run through Saturday, November 21, 2009. Below is the complete list of dates and times for available performances: October 10 -- 1:30 P.M. and 4:30 P.M. The Mama Foundation for the Arts, a Harlem based Gospel Academy founded by Vy Higginsen, who also created, produced and directed Mama I Want To Sing, will launch its newest production this Fall Sing Harlem Sing! The show will pay tribute to classic Harlem music.
Founded in 1998, the Mama Foundation for the Arts' mission is to help re-establish Harlem as a world artistic and cultural center. The foundation trains talented singers, musicians, and arrangers. The Mama Foundation for the Arts specializes in developing vocal power and stage presence as well as teaches a substantial musical repertoire. Participants have the opportunity to develop the habits and attitudes that create success in any endeavor.
